St. James’s is a very sociable church. Our common church life is focused around our worship on Sundays (and Thursdays when there’s no pandemic occurring). It converges on our prayer life and desire to serve others. There are opportunities to meet centred around social and fundraising events and weekly and seasonal study groups.
Dollar and District Churches Together provides the framework for Dollar Parish Church, and St. James’s to work together prayerfully and to share each others’ concerns. We share some services in Holy Week; pulpit exchanges when we swap ministers for the Sunday service and pew exchanges when the congregation is invited to attend the “other” church.
We work together during Christian Aid Week each year and at Christmas time to publicise services and events.
The congregation chooses charities to support each year: one “home”(local) and one “away”.
Our charities for the coming year chosen by the congregation are:
PARKINSON’S UK funding research and offering support to sufferers from this appalling degenerative disease and the ORBIS INTERNATIONAL FLYING EYE HOSPITAL , a non-profit humanitarian organisation devoted to blindness prevention & treatment in developing countries by means of an extraordinary flying service
Following the disruption caused by Covid, these causes will only supported for ten months to get our charity year back in synchronisation with our financial year..
Coffee Mornings held either in The Burnside Hall or the Parish Rooms are partly about fundraising but also very much about engaging with the wider community. These, of course, are dependent on whether or not restrictions are in place to curb the pandemic. At the moment, we are not able to gather in this manner, but we intend to do so as soon as it is safe.
Many members of St. James’s are involved with community activities within Dollar.
